As a dog trainer, I have seen and used a wide variety of different crates. There are a lot of different types of crates out on the market and there are certainly a number of pros and cons for each of them. At the end of the day, I almost always find myself gravitating to Petmate products. The Petmate Sky Kennel, 48 Inch Dog Crate is my top recommendation for big dogs.
Generally speaking, I prefer plastic crates over wire crates. I think the plastic crates tend to be safer, easier to clean, longer lasting and more den like. In addition to that, the Petmate models are approved for air travel. In my mind, the only downside of a plastic crate is that they don't fold up conveniently.
Let's take a deeper dive into the pros and cons to assess if this is the right crate for your pup:
PROS:
Heavy duty, sturdy, thick plastic
Quick & easy to put together & take apart
4-way locking door (Helpful for escape artists)
Easy maintenance & cleaning
Long lasting & durable
Replacement parts are available online
Approved for air travel
CONS:
This model is on the bulkier side of the scale. The crate is too wide to fit through most doorways so it has to be taken apart any time you want to move it in and out of a room. This crate consists of 3 big pieces; A door, the plastic shell top and the plastic shell bottom. (Comes with additional bolts that are used for assembly) When it is disassembled, it is going to take up more space than a similar size foldable wire crate.
More expensive than the comparable sized wire crate.
One last point that is worth noting:
This particular model can be a great option for dogs of various sizes that are typically capable of escaping/breaking out of crates. Especially, if you are simultaneously crate training with a professional and reputable trainer. If you are shopping for a fully escape-proof steel crate, you will quickly notice how expensive they are. The Petmate Sky Kennel, 48 inch crate is not entirely escape-proof but will work for most dogs. If you want to try one last plastic crate before upgrading into a costly steel model, this is going to be your best bet.
